Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT KIND OF EQUIPMENT CAN I EXPECT TO TRAIN WITH AT EPICENTRE?
Epicentre is not your ‘run-of-the-mill’ conventional gym. We believe that strength training with free weights, be it a barbell, kettlebell, or even a tractor tire, is far more effective than machines so we’re set up accordingly. We have power racks/cages, benches, lifting platforms, specialty bars, sleds, indoor turf, bands, kettlbells, dumbbells, strongman logs, and much more.
IS A CONSULTATION NECESSARY BEFORE JOINING OPEN GROUP TRAINING?
Not necessarily. If you are an experienced lifter or gym-goer, you are welcome to book a trial drop-in session during our Open Group Training hours. If you need more coaching and technical work than what we can provide in the group, we will ask you to book some 1-on-1 coaching sessions.
If you are new to barbell lifts and/or training in general, we ask that you book 1-3 personal training sessions with one of our coaches. We’ll review your health, goals, training experience and assess your starting level; teach you proper form and make personal recommendations for corrective work if necessary; and establish an appropriate & sustainable training plan to help you meet your goals.
DO YOU OFFER PROGRAMMING FOR OUTSIDE OF THE FACILITY?
Yes. If you live in the Montreal area, we ask that you start with 1-3 sessions of 1-on-1 personal training sessions at our facility with one of our coaches. From there, we can prepare a program for you to follow away from Epicentre. It is recommended that you take 1 personal training session every time your program is renewed so that we can ‘check in’ with you and make sure you are performing your routine properly. Please contact us for information regarding rates for this type of programming.
If you live outside the Montreal area and are interested in Distance Coaching, please contact us for more information.
HOW LONG DOES A PERSONAL TRAINING SESSION LAST? HOW LONG DO GROUP SESSIONS LAST?
Personal/Small Group training sessions last 1 hour. You should arrive 15 mins prior to your appointment. If you are attending the Open Group Sessions (evenings/weekend), our template programs are designed to take roughly 1h15-1h30mins (including warm up). You can arrive any time during the open group hours (see here) and you are welcome to stay as long as you need to, provided that you’ve factored in enough time to complete your training before we close up shop! On the other hand, if you only have 45-60mins to devote to your workout, that’s fine too! Speak with one of our coaches to find out how to streamline the program so you get the most out of the time you have to devote to training.
*Please note that our competitive powerlifting program sessions take more time.
HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR MY WORKOUT?
In general, we recommend that you have eaten a meal within a few hours of your session, that you are well-hydrated, and ready to work! We have lockers and shower/changing rooms for your use; please bring your own lock and a towel however as we do not provide these items. Please wear comfortable, workout-appropriate clothing that will not restrict your movement, clean indoor-only footwear, and bring a refillable water bottle. We ask that you do not wear head-phones/listen to an iPod while training as this makes it difficult for our coaches to give you cues & feedback.
I’M A TOTAL BEGINNER – IS THIS TYPE OF TRAINING APPROPRIATE FOR ME?
In a word: YES! Everyone can benefit from strength training. Teens, seniors, busy execs, weekend warriors, new mothers, and couch potatoes alike. We can teach you how to train safely and effectively no matter what your starting point or experience level. Our coaches are friendly and knowledgeable communicators who will make you feel confident and at ease in our space.
